Here we go again...

I was going to give you three guesses as to what this post was about and then i decided there was no point. There’s only one possibility; DESIGNER AND HIGHSTREET COLLABORATIONS.
Look, I’m making the effort to embrace the phenomenon but im not getting a chance to deal with it while constant new collaborative collections are being churned out in their millions. Just give me a break for a second, please! i cant think straight!
First this week came Erdem for Matches. There were five pieces in the ss2011 collection with printed maxi and mini dress. I thought it was nice, i dealt with it and then i moved on. However, only days later i am again challenged by Valentino for Gap. I just can’t take anymore.

When it came to Lanvin for H&M, i was annoyed about what it meant for the future of fashion but i was pleasantly surprised with the collection itself. Alber Elbaz added class, expense and luxury to the highstreet rather than cheapening his high-end label. The pieces are gorgeous, perfect for party season and have that “je ne sais quoi” that will make them utterly desirable and captivating.
I cant say the same about Valentino for Gap though. i do appreciate both seperately, but coming together, it just didn’t work. It doesn’t sound right to start with; the two don’t really fit. With Gap i see minimalist casual wear, perfect for everyday. When it comes to Valentino there is romance with ruffles, frills, chiffon and flowers. The designer are light, dainty and sensual; quintessential evening wear. All of these signatures have been taken into account regarding the design but there is something lacking which makes the collection not quite right.
The pieces are ok, i guess and i imagine that the design was good on paper but the heavy khaki just does not do it for me. It’s too hard and aggressive which, for me, makes it seems that Valentino has compromised to fit the Gap aesthetic rather than elements of each being evenly matched.
Don’t get me wrong, it will sell out quicker than Coco could say Chanel but for the moment i remain unconvinced.  Maybe viewing the entire collection as individual pieces may change my stubborn mind, who knows? the 27th November will seal the deal for me anyway.
