Luxurious Lanvin

Since his first collection for Lanvin in 2002, Alber Elbaz has brought even more luxury to the world of fashion. He made it clear that there is no excuse for a lady to lack glamour and proved this teaming fur with a casual tracksuit. Since that moment he has worked towards becomming one of the most influential designers of the decade and has made the Lanvin brand synonymous with luxury and elegance. Today his empire is as widely recognisable as Chanel, YSL and Gucci.

Spring 2009 sealed the deal for me. The heavy drapery of the expensive fabric and the rich colour made my mouth water. It was sleek, seductive, wearable high fashion. I adored the juxtaposition of elegant minimalism with the mismatched colour pallet, the bold embellishment and loud prints. If i were schizophrenic, there was a Lanvin dress to suit every Lana.

Although it may be fresh in my memory, ss2011 is my favourite Lanvin collection and i believe that it will be for years to come. It was so well put together and the drama of the collection was almost overwhelming. The gowns were soft and flowing and almost became an extension of the model; as smooth and delicate as her skin. It was artistic too, with one review even likening the gowns to an O’Keefe piece. However, Elbaz never likes to run with the same feel throughout and as the collection drew closer to the end, the design became darker and edgier with heavy duty embellishment but still maintained that effortless Lanvin luxury; it would be a crime not to.

A few days ago Alber Elbaz was awarded the prize for most influential designer at the Global Fashion Awards. I do suspect that this accolade may have something to do with that high-profile collaboration with H&M due on the 23rd, or as i like to call it “the most talked about thing in fashion this year”. Although i am quite vocal about my distaste for desgner/high-street collaborations, i do feel that if anyone should deserves this award, it is Elbaz. Not only is the collection perfect, but it represents so much. Luxury is now accessible to people who deserve it. For people like me; who fantasize over the pages of Elle and Vogue, hoping that if i stare into them hard enough, i will be absorbed into the magazine, this collection gives us the opportunity to be part of the fashion world, however distant it seems. For that, there is no award grand enough to express gratitude.
