With the oscars looming, it seems that elie saab had the red carpet on his mind. For his couture collection, which took centre stage in paris this morning, Saab greeted us with bounteous romantic, and somewhat coquettish, show stoppers fit for the most a-list of starlets.
Although the newest creations are highly comparable with the designers ss2011 collection, there are finer details to be explored. Haute Couture is all about reading the small print and appreciating the hand woven lace and the sequins, beading and hand-crafted flowers that are carefully applied one by one.
The shimmering nudes, pale shades and water-colour, flower printed dresses were beautifully ethereal, whimsical and tender. The powder blues, soft olives and frosted, alabaster silvery greys were like a fresh summer breeze, reminiscent of a Monet masterpiece. However, as the collection graduated, there was a progressive gathering of attitude and coy sex appeal with fitted, sinched in waists, asymmetric neck lines, daring splits and the introduction of black.
At first i found this collection to be artistically underwhelming with safe colours and shapes, until i saw the close-up shots and especially that of the jaw-dropping piece de resistance, bridal gown . These revealed the breathe-taking finesse and absorbing creativity that was so eloquently devoted to these pieces. I now realise that the craftsmanship in haute couture is not to be over-looked.
