It's my party... - Lanvin a/w 2012

Alber Elbaz invited all of his friends to the best 10th birthday bash in town. There was cake, plenty of cake, sugared almonds, chocolate eclairs and macaroons. Gorgeous guests were drowning in champagne, dancing to the tunes of a perfectly suited and booted band. At the end of show, Alber appeared from behind a curtain, twirling across the stage and serenading guests with his own heartfelt rendition of Que Sera Sera. Who knew the designer could hold a tune?

Alber Elbaz is quite the party animal.

The collection was a self-composed tribute to his legacy at Lanvin. Despite various trials and tribulations during his decade-long reign, Elbaz is, after all, the designer who gave the label some much needed CPR; breathing hope and prosperity into its deflated lungs.

Intense vivid dresses came in rainbow hues, tight fitted to the curves, enhanced with peplums and waist cinching belts. These smooth hourglass designs were complemented with flashy fur stoles in ruby red, cobalt and bottle green.

To get the celebrations truly underway, Elbaz unveiled a cavalcade of glitzy, party-ready dresses, adorned with bespoke brocade lace and rippling ruffles. Huge faux-antique garnet necklaces and the signature bug brooches completed the luxurious look.

Amidst the glitter-throwing carnival atmosphere, things took a tougher turn. Between the colorful frolic, the collection progressed into a momentary phase of monchrome power-dressing that hinted at severity with a mass of heavy leathers. It wasn't all fun and festivity beneath the sugar-coated surface. It may have been a telling insight into Aber's complex psyche - but who are we to speculate; it's his party and he can cry if he wants to....
