golden gowns

Award season is the highlight of my year. i watch each ceremony with the combined anticipation of all the nominees, keeping a tissue by my side for the half heart-felt, half phoney speeches and practice my jaw dropped, ecstatic winner’s face for when my day comes.
When the nominations are first announced i do two extremely nerdy things; firstly i list my winner for each category and secondly, i play “pin the dress on the starlet” by choosing a gown for every attendee i can think of. My mother would be so proud if only she knew what i spend my unemployment doing.
For me i see the Golden Globes as a dress rehearsal for the Oscars. We suss out the trends, see what works, what doesn’t and pray to god that here are no mistakes on the big night. I had expected a barrage of ss2011 gowns from Marchesa, Elie Saab, Monique L’Huillier and Reem Acra but was delighted to see a pleasantly even mix of seasons, designers, styles and, most importantly, colours; which seems to be the 2011 award season trend.
It was an all out battle among the starlets to secure the best dressed title; everyone took a risk and it mostly paid off. Rather than my usual title of number one gal, i have comprised a little list of the equally best dressed actresses due to such a high standard of styling.
5. Natalie Portman
Every night i went to bed wishing that Natalie Portman would appear like an angel in the white rodarte dress from black swan but, alas, that has not happened today. Instead, miss portman unexpectedly took to the red carpet in a pale pink Viktor & Rolf gown with a red embellished rose design. If anything, i was expecting Dior or Rodarte of some sort, both for obvious reasons….Nevertheless, she looked in full bloom; the perfect recipient of the leading actress award.
4. Megan Fox
As the flawless face and toned body of the brand, Megan Fox did a stunning job modelling a custom made design by Armani Prive. It was an exquisite tone of pink with just the right amount of glitz. Maybe im blind-sighted by my adoration for Megan but i think she is a goddess.
3. Angelina Jolie
The aire of mystery and intrigue surrounding Angelina Jolie stirs enough allure to make a magic red carpet moment regardless of the actress’ wardrobe choices but, my god; that green Versace Atelier dress. Covering-up seemed to be a recurring theme this year but none did it like la femme jolie. The deep emerald shade and the sequin detail made me forget about how odd she is and let me focus solely on her other worldly, enviable beauty. That accessory to her right, is a nice touch too….
2. Dianna Agron
She might be a red carpet newbie but Dianna Agron is already outshining some of the heavy-weights. Last year i was impressed by her flowing Reem Acra choice but she has really stepped it up a notch for 2011. Wearing a nude J.Mendel strapless dress from one of my favourite ss2011 collections, Agron is a vision. Her hair and make-up epitomise hollywood glamour and the minimalist detail with accessories kept the look fresh and elegant.
1. Olivia Wilde
There is never a more adequate setting to dress like a princess than on the red carpet. Olivia Wilde looked like she had stepped out of a couture fairytale in this deep chocolate brown, bejewelled masterpiece by, who else but Marchesa. Her stylist played russian roulette with those gold studded louboutins but won the jackpot as they finished the look and added some chic spice.
Other highlights worth a mention are Claire Danes and Emma Stone; both in Calvin Klein collection. Anne Hathaway in dipped back Armani Prive delight, Mandy Moore in Monique L’Huillier, Scarlett Johansson in Elie Saab and the wonderfully eccentric Helena Bonham Carter in Vivienne Westwood with two odd shoes- why not, eh?
Of course with the winners come the losers and in fashion it’s always so bitter. There were some vomit inducing disasters, i won’t go into details but my god Jennifer Love Hewitt. Eugh, boke, go way.
