New Lap Time - Alexander Wang - s/s 2012

Maybe it's my subconscious telling me to do some exercise, but i'm seeing a lot of sports-wear today. But I guess that's to be expected from Alexander Wang. He's down with the kids. He's the guy who makes the trends trendy before they even thought of trending.

Eyeing up NASCAR drivers, Wang adjusted women in motocross jumpsuits; altered to graze the curves and cut short to bait the men with a bit of thigh; re-imagining the prowess of a woman in her boyfriend's shirt. The collection had an erratic pace but breathed with a consistent energy. Models walked out, hands in the pockets of hooded mesh jackets, layered over "emergency orange" shirts; zips vertically running the course of their bodies. Drag racing jumpsuits and safety helmets were replenished with feminine florals and curvaceous peplum flares for a touch of irony, closely followed by knit body-con tracksuits, emblazoned with "go-faster" stripes.

The fantasy/flippancy continued to run through sporty streamlined panels and taut leather dresses that could have been made through reconstructed biker gear. More racing motifs and NASCAR checker flag patterns found their way across fitted boiler suits with geometric patterns (inspired by stadium seating maps) which hugged breasts and hips beside provocative sheer cut-aways. Bandanas and pointed pumps re-called the 90s, but as a collective, the pieces spoke of Wang's inherent modern eye, that can make the uncool, cool. But not that sweaty hair, it's disgusting.
