Vena Cava s/s 2012

"Hmmm....it's a bit Prada."

Well that was my first thought at least, jumping to conclusion after the slightest hint of those flouro stripes....But as i moved through Vena Cava's s/s 2012 collection, i felt optimistic about next year's summer wardrobe...until i realised it's September (and that fashion clearly doesn't own a calender)

Regardless of my ongoing seasonal confusion, i was pleased to see Vena Cava return to their roots, whilst garnering a retro flare on their way. This time, designers Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock, decided to buck the exhausting convention of a regular fashion show, instead opting to show their pieces at a swanky grown up dinner party; a move which is becoming ironically conventional with designers these days (cough, cough Tom Ford). Adapting to fashion's current conflict, in terms of fighting viral innovation with a desire to maintain its origin, the duo invited 12 trendy muses, such as Tennessee Thomas, Annie Clark and Norah Zehetner to model and fawn over the collection which was a far cry from a/w's moody drapes and hipster berets...

Moving back to my intention of praise, however,  it seems that Sophie and Lisa have soaked up the tropical summer sun and poured some laughter and charm into their designs. Halter-necks and pencil skirts were short, tight fitting and cinched at the waist, but were neither crude nor overtly sexual thanks to an intermission of quaint sun-dresses in youthful episodes of bright orange and jolts of pillar-box red.

Contrast stitching and abstract prints revived a Josephine Baker frolic and, still, balanced itself with an indochine type of tranquility. This was teased with rounded sunglasses and the nipped waist which delicately paraphrased vintage swimsuit shapes. But at the same time, botanical (marijuana) prints and Christopher Kane-esque dusty explosions stirred currency into a fanciful mix of time, place and person; cooking up an erratic yet polished and feminine collection which serves as delightful step forward for the brand.
