Women in white coats - The Row s/s 2012

Am i being sectioned?

As 22 models, paved the wooden catwalk, all draped in lucid white and palest nudes, the Olsen twins spread a quiet organic tranquility...with something moving beneath the surface.

It all started when they cited Nick Cave's Soundsuits as a commanding influence; i was lost. His avant garde sculptures are conceptual in shape and busy in colour and texture but these visual theoretics were completely lost amongst The Row's placid neutrality and balmy lethargy. With only the echoing clatter of dense shell embroidery, clinking mother of pearl bead-work and airy swish of billowing drapery, I couldn't feel further from the turbulent energy that Nick Cave wilfully captured in his art.

But then i felt it and understood completely. The designers' interpretation looked towards the Soundsuits from behind a screen, where sound was muffled. And this so obviously embodied The Row's ideology. As dedicated business women, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen seek to detach themselves from the buzz, but are still able to hear it from inside their sound-proof prism. It's not that they resent fashion week's hype and intensity but instead they choose to focus on the simple significance of clothing design from somewhere closer to the core.
