Dress And The City

I love party dresses. Who doesn’t though? I literally own one pair of trousers and the rest of my wardrobe is a combination of hot-pants and cute little dresses because they are so darn multifunctional. No matter where you are going, a party dress can be made up or down, accessorised and customised in countless ways to fit the occasion. My personal fail-safe, in any location or situation, is a dress, tights, a box jacket and Doc Martens but i understand that my style is not to everyone’s taste (especially to my mother’s) but think about it; no matter what your style, the party dress can work for you, provided you put your own spin on it. If you’re going to a club put on an lbd, get your limbs out, whack on some heels, some statement jewellery, a matching clutch and viola. “But what about the pub?” i hear you groan. If it’s casual you want just get some tights, flats, a cardigan, the same lbd and you have a totally different look. The party dress is the way to go.
I’m veering off the point ever so slightly and i’m being a bit “me, me, me” today but it’s just this once. Anyway, it’s my birthday soon and i need to actually blow the dust off my debit card and buy a new outfit, which is something i rarely do. Everything i own either cost under £20 or is a hand-me-down from any relative from my mum to my great-uncle. So, after having a look online i saw this wonderful creation from Asos for £165
Rare Opulence Corset Ballet Net Dress
With the ruffles and exaggerated structure, it’s somewhat reminiscent of pieces from the recent s/s 2011 Marchesa collection. i would love to buy this dress. My figure isn’t perfect for it but i hate that Gok Wan tripe that says you should dress for your shape. Screw that, never be held back in what you would like to wear. Fashion is about expression and that is totally impossible if you are restricted to certain items. Ok again veering off the point…but i do want this dress pretty badly.
It wouldn’t just be for my birthday; I don’t have the shoe collection or even the friends but If i bought that dress, every day i could become Carrie Bradshaw. i would sit in my flat all day writing articles and then (wearing that dress) i take a walk outside and become startled by a bus with my picture on it. It’s a lovely thought. I wouldn’t really have to do much with this dress because it should be the main focus. Perhaps a few little necklaces with simple hair and a smoky eye. However,I would love to rock it up with a leather jacket and some studs and really put my stamp on it.
I could sit all day playing dress up in my head but i know im never going to buy this dress in a million years. Even if i had enough money, i could not begrudge spending £165 on a piece of clothing. It’s terribly ironic coming from a girl who spends all day obsessing over ludicrously expensive designer items but i doubt that i’ll ever change so i may as well get over this dress and move on while i can…
