Fashion Week Round Up #1

Four weeks of fashion are almost at an end. Starting in New York, stopping off at London and Milan and arriving at final destination; Paris, it has been a hectic and exciting month for designers, models, editors, journalists and of course celebs who want to bag a free dress or two.
There have been too many shows to mention and honestly, I couldn’t be bothered writing about them all but I’m very kindly going to take you through my highlights.
Some shows were more memorable than others and the first of my favourites has to be one of the more recent; Jean Paul Gaultier. I always say that fashion is about innovation and although it is a “ready to wear” collection, I always prefer to see something unexpected and unconventional; more art than clothing to be honest. JPG is just what I ordered. His designs were forward thinking with a hint to the past. The models all strutted down the runways with attitude in their Joan Jett wigs and Doc Martens. There was so much variation with every look but each was as extreme as the last. He did prints, nautical theme, jumpsuits, underwear and jackets and he did it with originality.

Apart from the clothes there was something else significantly different about his show in particular. Interspersed between rail thin models were women of all shapes and sizes. It wasn’t just 20 size zero models with one size 16 woman thrown into the mix. No, every woman was different, with Beth Ditto even opening and closing the show. Gaultier wanted to show that the model’s size is insignificant and should not overshadow the fashion. It was a risk but he did prove his point.

In London, Burberry took over with a modern take on its iconic trench coat. They also debuted some incredible studded leather jackets to completely overtake last season’s aviator version. At Halston, the pieces were feminine and were luxurious in every sense of the word. I loved the use of colour at Gucci and the structure at Armani and my mouth watered over the Monique L’Huillier gowns. However, my absolute favourite had to be Marchesa.

Every single look was epic and completely breathtaking. Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig have so much talent and enviable ability to churn out endless masterpieces as each dress was perfection, fit for a princess. The whites looked like delicate antique pieces only to be worn by mystical ethereal creatures. No two items were the same but were part of one very distinguishable collection, unrivalled by any designer throughout fashion week. Marchesa has always been a favourite of mine because they always continue to out-do themselves and every other label and a Marchesa creation is instantly recognisable, which I love. In the collection I saw some dresses set for a definite appearance during award season. I know who I would go to for a memorable Oscsar look.
