She was the first designer to define a not only a generation but part of history by taking 70s punk culture to another level and breaking every boundary on the way. To celebrate Vivienne Westwood’s legacy, a new exhibition in Selfridges named “Vivienne Westwood Shoes: An Exhibition 1973-2010” is set to feature her unique and somewhat, controversial footwear designs. 200 pairs of shoes are to be displayed and are taken from her iconic past collections as well as the equally innovative contemporary ones. The exhibition, would, of course, be incomplete without the platforms that led to Naomi Campbell’s memorable descent from the catwalk in 1993.
Westwood also announced that as part of another future exhibition named “100 days of Active Resistance” the long celebrated designer would be inviting the public to take photos or create slogans etc that best fit this title and the winning entries will become part of the online presentation. As an icon in her own right, Westwood truly understands that fashion goes beyond the aesthetic. She says “It is not enough to follow world politics, see films and read the prize-winning best seller,” says Westwood. “This is superficial, you need to go deep in order to understand who you are, what the world is and how things could be better. This involves culture which can only be acquired by self-education: human beings should mirror the world.”
If you are lucky enough to make it over, the exhibition runs in Selfridges until 22nd Sept and the winning entries for 100 Days of Active Resistance will be found online www.ar100.comfrom 8th Sept.
