Right now i am lusting after a pair of Isabel Marant red leather trousers. If i was going to splurge on anything this autumn, Ms Marant may as well take my money now. They are key for this season but leather trousers have always been very hard to pull off, so i’m not sure about it. There are two unshakeable reputations; the first is that of 60 year old biker; leather clad, bandana to cover the receding hair line, fading tattoos, long grey beard, missing teeth. The second, and probably the worst, is the desperate 40-50 year old cougar combining sed leather trousers with a leopard print top, exposing almost the entirety of her tattooed breasts; she is most likely the ex-wife of the ageing rocker mentioned above.
Leather trousers carry so much stigma but when they are done right, they are chic, fashion perfection. Furthermore, in the eyes of men, there is an overt sexuality attached to them, in any way that they are worn. It’s like coy s&m and you are the dominatrix. Walking around town, women will want the trousers and the men will want you.
The era of the skinny jeans has come and gone. At the beginning, they oozed sex appeal and people were unsure of them, now i cant find any one who does not own a pair. I feel that this is the re-birth of the leather trouser; they are the only item that can bring back the “shock factor”. Kate Moss, Elle MacPherson and Cheryl Cole have done it so well, so the opportunity is there for women of all ages.
The styling possbilities for leather trousers are completely endless. You can team them with anything, depending on how far you want to push boundaries. For most people, however, it would be better to work towards minimalism and dress them down with a casual tank top or white shirt, a cardigan and flats. For day time, i would wear mine with a long, batwing jumper to add some grunge and but at night they would be glammed up to the max. Think studs and six inch heels. Im getting excited just typing about it, the leather trouser trend is one that im willing to grab hold of.
