An Education in Dressing Well

Harper’s Bazaar has declared 25 year old english rose, Carey Mulligan, best dressed woman of the year. The emerging Hollywood starlet, best known for her Oscar nominated role in “An Education”, has been commended for her unique look, seen almost as a current take on fifties and sixties femininity. She was described by the magazine as “so sixties New-Wave- like a Godard-starlet but totally modern”
The panel of judges, which included; Sienna Miller, Lucy Yeomans and Stephen Jones, have shown admiration for Mulligan’s casual and feminine personal style as well as for her daring red-carpet looks. Her choices are always mature and classy but she manages to maintain fun and youthfulness through her cropped hairstyle which flaunts her flawless complexion and delicate features.
Personally, i believe that Carey was the perfect candidate for this award. She displays individuality without pushing boundaries too far and her style is respectable which means she can be taken seriously as an actress as well as being fashion inspiration. The perfect role-model for young women, Miss Mulligan is lady-like; keeping the hemlines under the knee and the scandal under the radar.
My favourite Carey Mulligan fashion moment is  at the Toronto film festival, wearing this magnificent Christopher Kane dress with red satin pumps. graceful and fashion-forward successfully balances without being OTT.
She may not have won the Oscar but, in the fashion stakes, this award is kind of almost as prestigeous….i think.
Another favourite of mine, coming in at number 20 on the list, is young musician Coco Sumner. Standing a few metres back it would be hard to tell this rock-star daughter apart in a line up of 12 year old boys. With her scraggly shoulder length hair, over-sized band t-shirt, shorts, bare legs, brogues and socks; her breathe whispers “cool”. She’s dirty and grungy and unpolished but she is unmistakeably beautiful. i always find something very endearing (and jealousy inducing) about a girl who doesn’t care but still gets it so right. Like every other teenage girl she has gone through questionable fashion phases but unlike most, she has come through and emerges as a style icon for 2010. Her attitude, talent, enigma and style will take this 20 year old very far indeed.
