A few months ago there was a little controversy surrounding a certain Miu Miu leather appliqué dress which donned the cover of the September issue of three major fashion magazines. After that embarrassment, you would think that editors would be a little more careful when picking out the front-cover looks. Obviously not, as a beautiful gold sequined dress by Balmain, with a plunging neckline and daring split, has trumped the Miu Miu accident by appearing on no less than SIX covers!
The jaw dropping gown has dazzled on the cover of Vogue Germany, Spain and India. It has also featured on the front of Zeit Magazin, 10, Harper’s Bazaar and is set to round things off in the December issue of Elle, worn by Anne Hathaway.
You only have to take a quick glance to appreciate the beauty of this dress. I feel like a magpie being drawn to the shimmering gold but with a £21,000 price tag, I’m squawking away. It is bewitching though. The show-stopper commands the attention of every person in the room and, although floor length and entirely sequined, it doesn’t overwhelm the woman wearing it. The neckline is feminine and sexy at the same time and the split adds fun rather than more unnecessary sensuality. The tight fit, the shape and the elegance make it pure Hollywood glamour. It is the perfect Christmas party dress which, alone, is a fair excuse in explaining this strange incident.
However, there are many other party dresses out there to do the job just as well as Balmain. Furthermore, I don’t believe for one second that all of the editors were oblivious to the popularity of the dress. In the industry, everyone is part of everyone else’s business; public or private and in the past, press offices have made darn sure that magazines get exclusivity of a dress for a cover look. The Miu Miu mishap did draw a lot of attention to the dress and also to the magazines; all publicity is good publicity, right? Maybe it’s a not-so-clever scheme to lift a few more copies off the stands.
The first time could be brushed off as a mistake, this time it is questionable but you will forgive my cynicism if this front cover faux-pas occurs a third time. Let’s hope editors take a little more care with their research…
