crazy for couture

whenever couture week kicks off i turn into some sort of deranged fashion crack whore, constantly pressing refresh on sites to catch a glimpse of new collections and when they arrive i literally can not click fast enough to get my fix. Sometimes i get scared that my fiance will walk in on me and assume that i have my eyes glued to some x-rated porn; most people dont consider it natural to get as titillated as i do about dresses…
So, as you have probably guessed, couture week is in full swing in Paris. Alexis Mabille was supposed to kick start the party but i was so unmoved by the feeble attempts that i am going to ignore the entire collection and move onto more exciting times at Dior.
Mr Galliano truly certified a collection that could rightfully justify even the words “haute couture” by ensuring a flabbergasting amount of volume and structural exaggeration, theatrics in the hair and make-up department, an extensively varied colour pallette combined with inventive and fiercly strong design inspiration. The result was drama on top of drama- as always.
The designer sought vision from artist and fashion illustrator,  René Gruau who worked alongside Christian Dior in the earlier days of the design house. The influence of the artist is vastly evident in various vintage throwbacks such as the long opera gloves and the glamourous 40s/50s hair and make-up with scarlett painted on brows. In addition to this, Galliano further paid homage to Gruau through the fluidity of the lines which mirrored the brush-strokes of his artist inspiration
Obviously, couture is all about the intricacies of design and on this occasion, the couturier  extended his hand to the craft of “chiaroscuro”; a degradé effect which moves light into dark. This was flawlessly achieved on the multi-layered, cascading pieces of fabric, shadow-dyed from blood red to black and powder blue to beige.
I adored everything about this collection mainly due to the extravagancy. Armani Prive is next to be unveiled this evening with Chanel and Givenchy following tomorrow; thrilling times ahead.
