Forget the “pob” or even the undercut, this season calls for ombre. The hairstyle, which is esssentially a modern take on grown out roots (seen a lot on Kurt Cobain wannabes in the 90s) is back with a twist. The sudden popularity could be attributed to the fact that it is very conventional and economically friendly as you won’t have to run to a salon at the first sight of ghastly black roots because now it’s chic! Also, it makes you look effortlessly glamorous, that “i pretend ive rolled out of bed looking this good but secretly im trying very hard” type of thing that we all do.
The hairstyle has been seen on all sorts of celebrities; of course the hipsters like Rachel Bilson, Alexa Chung and Erin Wasson have been seen rocking this look but, surprisingly, so has the very chic Hilary Swank. It’s clearly a ‘do that can be adapted and made to work with any style.
The trend is more suited to brunettes, who can keep their naturally dark colour on top, with gradually lightening shades towards the ends. Of course, it would still look very interesting on blondes who could sport light roots with darker ends. Hair-stylist to Erin Wasson (who many say was the pioneer of the look) explained that the Ombre-ing process is very intricate and involves hair painting; wherein sections of hair are strategically dyed to varying degrees of lightness. Ombre is perfect for modern grunge as seen on the Proenza Schouler and Marc Jacobs catwalks for this season (a/w 2010) but evidently the colouring can translate into a sophisticated and elegant look when done less dramatically; as modelled by Miss Swank. It’s perfect if you want a seasonal change and can be as drastic as you want. i would really really love to try out a version similar to Drew Barrymore’s (below) but i cant because a) my hair will fall out if i dye it anymore and b) i will be so fed up in a few months EVERYONE will have this hairstyle. mark my words. It’s still cool though.
