The public vote is the new big thing. We have the power in every arena; singing, dancing, you name it, it was only a matter of time until this idea swept the world of fashion.
Today we were given the news that a new category would join the British Fashion Awards (aka, the fashion oscars) and it would be up to, you guessed it; the public, to decide the deserved winner. The new-fangled “British Style Award” should ideally go to the individual “who embodies the spirit of London and is an international ambassador for London as a leading creative fashion captial”. However, ultimately, it will be little more than a popularity contest that either Emma Watson or Alexa Chung will win.

Out of the two i would prefer Miss Chung to walk away with the accolade as i admire her personal style and genuinely believe that she appropriately represents the real “London Look” of today. Nevertheless, Emma Watson is the contender that they all need to beat. This year, she has already walked away with the number one spot on Glamour’s best dressed list and with so much publicity surrounding her and the iminent release of Harry Potter, my money is on Miss Watson in the blue corner.
Previously i believed that Emma Watson, although a fashionable and sophisticated young woman, had the personal style of no less than a more expensive Hermione Granger. However, she has blossomed with her daring new haircut her true character is shining through and she is expressing individuality.
She is a true English rose; she stuns at every red carpet event with her elegant poise, flawless face and perfect fashion choices. A particular highlight was the Met ball earlier this year where she attended with Christopher Bailey wearing a stunning white Burberry gown. She looked like an Angel. Then there was just earlier this week at the Harry Potter premiere when the young starlet looked ravishing and coy yet sexy in a laced and feathered black vintage mini by Rafael Lopez for Atelier Mayer. I was taken aback by her star quality.
Even casually she knows what she’s doing. Her outfits are always perfectly put together to outline her feminine frame but she never shows too much skin in a bid to protect her respectable image; her stylist is doing a fabulous job.
I do think she is the one to beat in this category and her win would be deserved albeit i would love to see someone like Tilda Swinton swoop in and grab it. She’s an inspiration to so many designers like Victoria Beckham and Tom Ford, yet, unfortunately she is hugely overrated and usually remains under the radar when it comes to public recognition which is so disappointing. Who knows, maybe Tilda will lead the pack, or will it be and easy defeat for Emma Watson? We’ll just have to wait and see. May the best dressed lady win!
